Story

Nancy Tahaney is a former paramedic from New York City who was a first responder during the tragic events of 9/11. In 2006, she relocated to McDonough, Georgia. After losing friends and colleagues on that fateful day and witnessing others struggle with long-lasting health effects, Nancy became a volunteer director for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supports first responders and their families.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Nancy had just finished her shift as a paramedic when she learned that a plane had crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Like many others, she quickly put on her gear and rushed back to help those in need. She has vivid memories of that day—the sights, the smells, and the sounds as she made her way toward the chaos.

“New York City was quiet at first,” Nancy remembers. “Then the noise of fighter jets flying overhead filled the air, and everything was covered in a thick layer of white dust.” Even after twenty-plus years, she can still recall the smell of the dust that lingered after the towers fell, and it’s difficult for her to go back to that place.

Nancy is determined to continue helping those who risk everything for others, supporting the brave individuals who work on the front lines every day.
